System to the Stream
Instructed by Jerry Herbst
& Chris “Stretch” Martin from Elkhart Brass

This 4-hour class will be a deep dive into the hydraulic and design implications of creating effective fire streams from both standpipe outlet valves and extended hose lines.  Utilizing the foundations built from the Brass Tacks & Hard Facts engine company training video series, instructors will guide the students through realistic evolutions replicating common hydraulic hang-ups when stretching both vertical and horizontal.  Best practice solutions will be presented congruent with industry trends and effective fire flows.

“Hands-On” flow evolutions will cover the following:

• The four types of standpipe valves, how to identify and challenges associated with hooking up to each type.
• Actual flow comparisons between 1-3/4” and 2-1/2” from a standpipe outlet and what makes a winning versus losing standpipe attack package.
• The appropriate equipment needed to make a proper standpipe hook up and how to utilize them when going vertical.
• Hydraulic implications of extending hose lines for distance utilizing reducers, increasers, and shut-offs.
• The gated wye hydraulic paradox and how it can affect your long line operation.

An Unfair Fight:
Fire Attack With Large Hand Lines
Instructed by Jonathan Brumley & Jonah Smith

This 4-hour class is designed to help equip firefighters to confidently and successfully utilize the 2.5" attack line. Our focus will be on increasing mobility, positioning of personnel, and water placement.  This will be completed through a variety of interior-centered scenarios, including those with limited visibility. Attendees will leave with practical solutions that will guide any department in developing competency within 2.5" operations.
