Smoke Reading & Fire Behavior: From the Inside Out

Nick Dinges & Cadre

Date: July 23 or 24 (1-Day Class)
Class Time: 0800-1700
Location: TBA
PPE: Full PPE & SCBA

This full-day course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence fire behavior by blending fire science with practical fireground application. Participants will examine how modern fuels, ventilation, building construction, and flow paths affect fire development, growth, and firefighter safety throughout an incident.

The course combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning, reinforcing how fire behavior directly drives tactical decision-making on the fireground. Students will connect the science behind fire dynamics to real-world actions such as ventilation timing, door control, water application, and crew positioning.

The day culminates with a live-fire demonstration in a flashover container, allowing students to observe fire behavior changes in real time under controlled conditions. This immersive experience reinforces key concepts, enhances situational awareness, and provides takeaways that can be immediately applied to operational firefighting.

This course is ideal for firefighters and officers who want a deeper understanding of why fires behave the way they do and how informed, science-based tactics improve safety, effectiveness, and survivability.
